As you’re an individual who has lived and been conditioned by your friends, family, and your own thoughts, you will have created neural pathways over time. A neural pathway is [INPUT (from the exterior world)] which is then linked to thought/emotion/behaviour within your mind. This creates your automatic self.
Repetitive behaviours form strong neural pathways. This is healthy if the behaviour is positive and results in positive emotion not so healthy if the behaviour is negative and results in negative emotion.
To facilitate change, learning and memory are used to form new neural pathways.
