Motivation

 

Intrinsic

Intrinsic motivation - an internal desire to pursue an activity for its own sake, driven by personal enjoyment, curiosity, or a sense of fulfilment. 

·         Learning: studying a subject because you find it interesting

·         Creative pursuits: drawing, painting, writing, music, all for the process

·         Personal growth: Improving skills, mastering something, helping you develop

·         Helping others, volunteering, mentoring, community

·         Hobbies: things you enjoy, gardening, hiking, photography etc.

·         Work: staying at work because you enjoy the work

·         Relationships: spending time with someone because you enjoy their company

·         Physical activity: exercise because you enjoy the feeling

 

Extrinsic

Extrinsic motivation - activity to achieve an external outcome, such as rewards or avoiding punishments.

·         Salary/Wage

·         Bonuses

·         Promotion

·         Recognition

·         Avoiding negative consequences: Following company policies to avoid discipline

·         Grades: Studying to achieve good grades. 

·         Scholarships: Writing a good research paper to secure a scholarship. 

·         Rewards: Completing chores to receive a reward

·         Social Status: Seeking social recognition or approval. 

·         Material Wealth: Working to acquire material possessions. 

·         Avoiding Punishment: Following rules to avoid punishment. 

·         Loyalty Program: Going to a particular store to benefit from loyalty programs. 

·         Competing for a trophy or prize 

 

 

 

If we enjoy something, or if we gain, then this behaviour is likely going to be repeated due to dopamine reinforcement.
